Palm Pre appears to fill XT network credentials, but only limited reception.

I purchased a Palm Pre (GSM quad band 850,900,1800,1900and HSDPA 850,1900,2100) on the belief that it was going to work on the Skinny XT network.

I find that I get very limited reception (2 bars) and wonder if I am only getting the in-fill 2100 band and not the 850 band.

Is it possible that the850 band is not enabled?

I know that the IMEI number check says that the phone will not work on the skinny network, but is that test/check infallible?

Getting this to workwould be great. Contacts moved easily to new Palm.

A matter of performance

My daughter has had two, late model mobile phones over the past couple of years, namely an

Ideos U8150 and a Motorola Defy +.

The Ideos previously worked perfectly fine (voice, TXT and data) over the 2 Degrees and TNZ XT networks, but had (still does) reception problems when she switched to Skinny when it became available.

My understanding is that Skinny essentially is a 'pricing model' that runs over the XT network, so why the poor signal coverage?

We ran the phone's IMEI numbers through the compatability databases - XT said it was 'probably compatable', whilst the Skinny site at first (couple weeks ago) said ok, but now lists it as incompatible .... Skinny offer this as a reason for the poor reception in many areas.

My questions are -

1: Is Skinny and TNZ's XT really exactly the same network?

2: If it is, are Skinny SIM cards/numbers being 'throttled" or "shunted" within or to a special space (viz. lower performance) on the network to reflect the lower cost?

3: Would telcos really manipulate their services or SIMS for phones that they themselves don't sell?

Thanks.

Help: Skinny internet occasionally stops working until iPhone is reset

I have an iPhone 4 and my girlfriend has a 4S. We've got the latest carrier settings, good 3G reception, and the majority of the time internet works great. However, every few days or so, 3G internet will completely stop working for one of us. The only way to fix it is to turn airplane mode on and off again, or reboot the phone. Then it will immediately start to work again. When it's not working, reception is still great and the 3G symbol still shows in the status bar - phone calls and regular txt messages all work. However, data networking requests all immediately fail. Loading a webpage in a browser tells you that the site is unreachable, and no iMessages can be sent or received. It's almost as if the data network has kicked the phone off the network, but re-establishing a connection from scratch fixes it.I was previously on Telecom and 2degrees and this never happened. I know Skinny piggybacks off the Telecom cellular network, but as I understand they're using separate networking systems on the back-end. It's highly annoying when you realise you haven't been receiving iMessages for hours with no indication that anything was wrong. I've been with Skinny since they launched, and was hoping this was a tech issue that would eventually be resolved, but I'm thinking about switching providers if I can't find a resolution. Is anyone else experiencing this, or can someone from Skinny please comment? Thanks!

Hi, Just bought a Skinny SIM yesterday and successfully ported my old VFNZ number across today. Successfuly sign up online and got one free week of loose lips. Able to make calls, surf the net, receive text but unable to reply or send text. Check text message setting and the service centre = +64204864236, SMS access = circuit switched, Email gateway = not set. Check text message balance @ *888# and see that I still have 100 NZ text left. Not sure what is wrong here? Anyone able to help?

Been using a skinny phone since Jan but they want $30 to unlock

Hi,A while back, shortly after skinny launched, but I can't remember exactly when, I purchased a Skinny phone from Dick Smith. Admittedly it is just for emergency purposes for when I travel outside the 2degrees coverage area. The box came with the phone (U2800) and the SIM - this is the only skinny SIM that we have and the phone and the SIM were purchased at the same time. After you have had the phone for 9 months you are supposed to be able to unlock the phone for free. I wanted to do this so that I could use a local SIM when I travel to Australia next week. When I login to the Skinny website I can see that I was making calls in January of this year, but it won't let me unlock the phone for free.I called Skinny support and was basically told that the online tool was correct. He could see that I had made calls in January, but said that it could be from a different phone, and he couldn't see that the phone that I wanted to unlock was the one I used the SIM in. I told him that I had the box with both the SIM number and IEMI number on them which shows that I bought the SIM and the phone at the same time, and that I could email a photo if he liked. He said that he would see what he could do and ring me back. Still waiting (about 3 hours later) for the call back.Anyone else had unlocking issues with Skinny?

I was just perusing the skinny website and see add-on minutes and texts, not just additional data. This must be new. I can see that for a shrewd customer there's some value to be had. http://skinny.co.nz/2377_EN-Skinny_Pricing-Add-ons.htm

Can anyone help please?I am having difficulty finding a dual Sim mobile telephone which will work properly with 1 x Skinny Sim (think it is 2100 htz on 3g)+1 x Vodafone standard prepay sim (think it is 850 htz and 2g?)Preferable would be a fairly basic phone with a camera of at least 1.3mp and a long standby if possible.A bonus would also be a flip fone or phone with cover but this is not essential.Anyone know a good store where these are available in North Shore or Auckland?Any suggestions welcomeThanks

What is the standard rate for international data, such as visiting USA websites? I assume NZ national data is only for websites/IP addresses in New Zealand and doesn't count visiting overseas websites?

In another 2 months I will be free from my current contract and I am very keen with port my number to skinny - I have been using a skinny SIM in my backup phone and it has never failed me. The only thing holding me back is the ASB netcode problem, I am aware that it has not been solved since the network was launched back in.....quite a long time. Any ETA on getting it sorted?

Skinny down again?

I am new to Skinny as at today. Put in the Sim and everything was working, they even ported my number hop smart. However since about 8pm I've been unable to send text messages (receiving is fine) and cannot use data. I have over 600MB balance of data, tons of minutes etc etc. Phone is Galaxy Note II.Their incident tool doesn't seem to be working either and can't phone them as it's out of hours. What do others do to alert them to a potential outage?Anyone else noticed anything tonight? Thanks.
